Lemon Verbena Health Benefits

Lemon Verbena Health Benefits

One of the most relied upon items in our house besides Essential oils is Lemon Verbena – it’s something that you can always find in a jar on our counter, and something that travels with my husband every time we go out of town.

Lemon Verbena is a plant and herb that has powerful effects on human health.  It has done wondrous things for my husband, who drinks it several times each day.

The plant is native to South America, and is a shrub that has a lemony scent – it can be up to 15 feet high and usually has small purple and white flowers. In most cases, it’s used as a flavoring for chicken or fish (seafood and poultry), or even salads – in fact, it can be used in place of oregano since it has a flavor that ties between licorice and camphor.

Lemon Verbena is most commonly found in dried leaves and flowering tops that are used for herbal tea. The leaves of the plant are dried and then steep to help boost your circulation and metabolism.

Lemon verbena has many qualities that make it super for our health, from digestion to anxiety, rest and more. Find out why this herb should be in everyone's medicine cabinet.

BENEFITS OF DRINKING LEMON VERBENA

Lemon verbena has many qualities that make it super for our health, but the primary reason that you will find it in our kitchen and used for tea is because it helps settle an uneasy stomach, provides ease of digestion and helps to reduce inflammation.

Aside from those qualities, Lemon verbena has many other benefits:

It’s great for weight loss. Lemon verbena can subside your appetite and prevent you from eating and snacking between meals. Since it’s great for circulation, it also helps by supporting a healthy metabolism which in turn will help support the body in it’s natural fat-burning processes.

Helps soothe the digestive system. Steeping the tea for a short period of time and drinking as a warm tea can help support healthy digestion on a stomach that is troubled. It can help alleviate cramping and bloating, all the while helping your body optimize nutrient intake.

It’s great for supporting a healthy immune system. Stress is a very damaging thing  – and over time, oxidative stress can weaken the immune system. Lemon verbena can help restore stress levels to a healthier level which in turn will strengthen the immune system.

It has calming and relaxing effects on the nerves. For those who struggle with frequent anxiety, like my husband, Lemon Verbena can serve to ease the mind and body through it’s antioxidant compounds.

It helps to alleviate congestion.  Instead of reaching for your over the counter cough syrup or medicine, reach for Lemon Verbena. It serves as an expectorant that helps you get rid of the build up of phlegm and mucous in your respiratory system that build up due to bacteria.

Lemon Verbena is an incredibly helpful herb to help anxiety, digestion, and immunity – once incorporated into the diet, it can do wonderful things to help ease an unsettled stomach and rattling nerves.

Incorporating it into your diet may help you sleep better at night, too – which is always a great thing.    We most commonly pick up Lemon Verbena from Mountain Rose Herbs – but you may be able to find it at Frontier Co-op as well.
